The Botanical Garden is located in the Nymphenburg district and is one of the largest botanical gardens in Germany. Around 16,000 different plant species grow there.

Karl Ritter von Goebel was the initiator

Originally, the garden in the city centre between the main railway station and Karlsplatz. It was designed by Friedrich von Sckell planned and completed in 1812. At that time, there were green areas, greenhouses for tropical plants and, from 1854, a glass palace with changing art exhibitions. Today, the park is open to the public and is called the Old Botanical Garden.

In 1914, the New Botanical Garden was created in Nymphenburg, then outside the city, due to lack of space. It was planned by Karl Ritter von Goebel, a German botanist. He also became the first director. Today, the garden not only introduces visitors to the world of plants, but is also involved in scientific research projects, participates in the training of landscape gardeners and serves to preserve rare plant and insect species.

What the Botanic Garden offers its visitors

The garden displays plants from all over the world on around 18 hectares and in greenhouses covering 4,500 square metres. Plants from deserts, cool-tropical mountain forests and humid tropical areas can be seen, as well as native flowers, grasses, shrubs and trees. In the botanical garden you can get ideas for your own garden or balcony and take a marvellous walk. A passageway also leads directly into the Nymphenburg Palace Park.

In winter, visitors can admire 400 different tropical butterfly species flying around freely in a tropical greenhouse in a special exhibition. And at the end of June, the botanical garden attracts rose lovers. This is when there is a large rose show. Members of the Society of German Rose Lovers answer questions about the cultivation and care of roses and there is a small market selling roses and things decorated with roses. Finally, it is worth mentioning the beautiful café with its sunny terrace, which can also be hired for events.
